CAIRNS introduction:

Basics:
Located on Trinity Inlet, Cairns Seaport handles cargo and passenger vessels. The port contributes a lot to the city’s tourism economy as 202 international and domestic cruise ships visited it between 2004 and 2005. The main cargo area is in the southern end of the port, handling 1.16 million tons of cargo annually. The Royal Australian Navy has a base in Cairns which has a complement of 900 personnel and supports fourteen warships.

Traffic:
As n important transport hub in the Far North Queensland region, the Port is located at the base of Cape York Peninsula, providing important transport links between the Peninsula and Gulf of Carpentaria regions, and the areas to the south of the country. Cairns International Airport facilitates the viability of the tourism industry of this area. There are the Bruce Highway in Cairns southern suburbs running for 1,700 km from Brisbane and terminating in the Cairns CBD. The Captain Cook Highway runs for approximately 76 km northwest to Mossman. The Kennedy Highway commences at Smithfield and goes to the township of Kuranda. The Gillies Highway commences at the township of Gordonvale and runs to the town of Atherton. Long-distance coaches to Brisbane and regional cities to the south are serving Cairns. Cairns railway station is the terminus for Queensland's North Coast railway line following the eastern seaboard from Brisbane. Cairns International Airport is about 7 km north of Cairns City between the CBD and the Northern Beaches. The airport has a domestic terminal, an international terminal and a general aviation area. The airport handles international flights as well as flights to major Australian cities, tourist destinations and regional destinations throughout North Queensland.

Climate:
Cairns experiences a tropical climate. Heavy monsoonal rains runs from November to May, while there is a relatively dry season from June to October. Its average annual rainfall is slightly over 2,000 mm. Cairns is hot and humid in summers and has milder temperatures in winters.
