Singapore Trade Introduction:

Located in the Strait of Malacca in Souteast Asia, Singapore is a city state with an extremely developed shipping industry. It is also one of the world's top ten ports. The foreign trade volume of Singapore is four times its GDP. The commodities imported and exported include processed petroleum products, chemicals, consumer goods, parts and accessories of machines, data processing machines and parts, telecommunication equipment and pharmaceuticals. The major trade partners are Malaysia, Thailand, China, Japan, South Korea, the USA, Europe and Indonesia.

Important Notes about Customs of the Singapore:

Before goods are exported to Singapore, a licence must be obtained through the TradeNet system. Upon clearance, goods owners or agents must submit licences, import approvals or ATA to the customs for examination, along with relevant documents, such as invoices, packing lists, bills of lading and airway bills. Duties and/or consumption tax should be paid based on applicable rates and formalities should be handled for discharge of goods.

As to imported goods declared in multiple periods and shipments, the same licence should be submitted for examination for every declaration. It should be checked and stamped until clearance of all goods is completed.

If goods are exported from Singapore, a relevant customs export licence should be obtained.

When duty-free and unregulated goods are transshipped within the same customs controlled area, no customs transshipment/removal permit is needed. As to goods transshipped under airway bills, it is needed.
